About the Ford 1600
The Ford 1600 was part of Ford's compact tractor line, built by Shibaura in Japan under Ford's long-running import arrangement. It is powered by a two-cylinder Shibaura diesel of 77.7 cu. in. (1272 cc), rated at 2500 rpm and producing 23.0 observed PTO horsepower. The transmission gives nine forward speeds, arranged as three ranges of three, and three in reverse, for ground speeds from 0.4 to 8.7 mph on 11.2 × 24 rear tires.
It carries manual steering, drum brakes, and a Live Position Control Category I three-point hitch. Mechanical draft control was an option rather than standard equipment. At 2260 lbs. bare on a 62.6 inch wheelbase, the 1600 is the largest of Ford's early Shibaura-built compacts, and a capable small-acreage machine for loader work, tilling and three-point implements.
One thing worth knowing before you buy an implement: the 1600's PTO is transmission driven, not live. It stops when you depress the clutch. That matters for anything you would want to keep turning while you stop moving, a rotary cutter or a baler in particular.
What This Manual Covers
This 39-page manual runs from pre-delivery inspection through daily operation and into the full maintenance and storage schedule. Key sections include:
- Safety Precautions, the original Ford safety guidelines for the 1600
- Controls & Instruments, covering seat, lighting and engine controls, brake and rear axle controls, transmission and PTO controls, and hydraulic lift system controls
- Operation, covering break-in procedures, engine starting and stopping, operating the transmission and PTO, the differential lock, hydraulic lift system use, wheel tread settings and tractor weighting
- Lubrication & Maintenance, with the maintenance chart, fuel and lubricant specifications, service procedures, general maintenance and tractor storage
- Specifications, the factory capacities, dimensions, torque values and settings
- Pre-Delivery & 50-Hour Service, the factory checklist for initial and break-in service, useful when evaluating a used 1600 with unknown history
Why This Manual Matters
- Hydraulic system documentation: the 1600's system runs a 10.5 quart reservoir on M2C41-A, with a gear pump delivering 4.2 gpm and a relief setting of 1422 psi. Those figures are frequently guessed at on used machines; this manual states them.
- Transmission and rear axle share their oil on the 1600, a single 21 quart fill. The specification and change interval documented here differ from larger Ford models, and using the wrong fluid is one of the more common maintenance mistakes on this platform.
- Wheel tread and weighting guidance with the actual Ford-specified ranges, including the cast iron weight sets, which matters for stability and three-point performance on a tractor this size.
- 50-hour break-in service, particularly valuable when acquiring a used 1600. The factory pre-delivery and 50-hour checklist tells you exactly what Ford specified before the tractor entered service.
- Original factory content, the manual Ford issued to 1600 owners at delivery, carrying manual code SE 3551 9763, not a generic aftermarket substitute.
Full Specifications
Looking for the technical numbers? The Ford 1600 specifications page reproduces the manual's specification section in full: engine, capacities, cooling, electrical, hydraulics, PTO, tires, wheel bolt torques, lubricants, dimensions and ground speeds.
It also explains something that surprises a lot of owners. Ford printed the same specification pages in the Ford 1000 manual and this one, so the Ford 1000 and the 1600 share their published mechanical specification exactly.
